how do you make ms word default.doc program?

using vista- when i try to open any .doc file, it takes me to ms works and
says the file is corrupt... how do i make ms word the default program for
..doc files????

I tried this solution and it didn't work - when I try to open a docx
attachment, Works comes up and I get a message that the file cannot be opened
and may be corrupt. I have been using Works for a few months and installed
MS Office Home and Student 2 days ago. Is there something else I can do?
This problem has stopped all progress on a time sensitive project!

In Windows Explorer, right-click on a Word document and choose Open With.
Select Microsoft Word and check the box that says something like "Always use
this program to open this kind of file."
