How does Access compare to CRM?

I've never heard much about CRM. Don't know what it is
other than a Database
application. Anybody know how that compares to Access? We
have folks changing
from Access to CRM. I don't understand why. Any help
would be appreciated.

CRM stands for Customer Relationship Management and there are several
software packages out there for doing that. CRM, at least as I know of, is
not something that you can compare to Access because a CRM application can be
written in Access, just as it can be written in C++, C#, Java, Cobol, etc.

It is a designation of a type of software that lets you manage your customer
relationships by storing data about your customers, and your business, and
lets you retrieve it in meaningful ways.

Thanks Bob. I guess I still don't know why anyone would go
to CRM. I've written
in Cobol. There you write job specific programs and build a
system.

If I understand you correctly, CRM is not a programming
language? Are
the files Data Base type files? Wouldn't writing database
applications
be more flexible?

Thanks again Bob.

Remember CRM is not a specific application, it is a TYPE of application. An
application can be a CRM. It is not a programming language and it is not a
database so to speak. It USES databases, but it is a complete PACKAGE of
software that uses databases to store information and display it and analyze
it.

As to the question about "wouldn't writing database applications be more
flexible" the answer is not necessarily. I would think that, depending on
which CRM you choose, you can access the data with tools such as Crystal
Reports, Access, Excel, etc. to analyze the information, but they have their
own analysis tools as well.
