how does one change a task id number?

I use MS Project in the network format to show work flow and able to see time
issues at a glance. But I've moved things around so much that my task
numbers jump all over the place when looking at this in a ghant chart format.
Rather ugly refering to the second task on the sheet (in time/date format)
which is number 63!
Is there a way to renumber these tasks without losing predecessors?

Hi,

It's usually much better/easier to add tasks in the Gantt view as you can
then group tasks logically under summary tasks and the numbering looks after
itself.

To correct your numbering I suggest:
Select View, Gantt Chart
Insert the column Number1
Enter the ID numbers you want in the sequence you want
Select Project, Sort and select Number1 to sort by and select the option
renumber tasks.

This should then renumber based on your sequence. Alternatively you could
renumber based on date.

Project was designed to be used from the Gantt chart so many things work
better from there. If you do use the Gantt chart for structuring and linking
your tasks, you can still go back to the Network diagram any time you like.
