How get two lines of text on one actual line

I am a secretary in a church and one of our members called to ask me if "I
knew how" to make a fraction with words instead of numbers and insert it on
one line of text. She does not want to use the "/" sign between them. She
is a math teacher and wants to put a formula on a line of instruction for her
kids, i.e. "First you subtract" on the top and "Then you add" on the bottom,
with a line in the middle.

I tried to superscript with an underline and that worked. But I couldn't
back to put something underneath. You can't superscript and subscript at one
time, can you?

If anyone has a suggestion, I would appreciate it.

You could insert an EQ field such as:

{ EQ \f (First you subtract,Then you add)}

I guess you're using MS Word, right?

When you install, be sure to select "formula editor" or "Equation
editor" (same thing, name varies in different versions of Word). The
"full" install of some Office versions don't install that module by
default, so you'll need to do a custom, detailed install.

With that module installed, you can "insert - object - Microsoft
Equation" and edit at will. A little cumbersome at first, but better
than manual field editing.

For even easier editing you can buy the "MathType" add-in.

The equation objects can behave like graphical objects, so you may need
to reformat them to make them flow with the rest of the text.
