## How modify built-in headings ##

W

Wai

Product: MS Word 2002 (English version)

I need to modify Word built-in headings.
But I found it very hard to modify a right style to suit
my taste.

Eg: Heading 1
- Font 14 + Sky blue
- other styles and formatting will just follow what the
current text is
(eg if the current text's font type is Arial, then it
keeps Arial.
If Times New Roman, then Times New Roman)

How can I modify what I want?
[Please tell me step-by-step if possible, thanks !!]

Thank you very much for your attention and answers.

PS:
Before I hated using Word built-in headings - their
heading styles don't suit my taste.
After hearing advantages of using them, I am willing to
have a go.
But troubles occurred again...

Are you saying that you want the Heading 1 style to inherit its
font from the parent (based on) style? If this is what you want,
then you need to modify the font of the Heading 1 style so that
it's identical to the font currently used by the parent style. In
the future, it will automatically use the font setting of the
parent style.

I do not think you can get exactly what you say you want. A heading has to
have some sort of Font formatting, so you cannot apply Heading 1 to two
separate lines and expect them to remain in different fonts, one bold, the
other underlined. Making formatting *consistent* is half the point of
styles.

Create a separate style for each type of heading that you want. Or record a
macro that applies 14pt Red formatting manually, and run the macro on your
headings.

What I wish is:

eg:
What my built-in Heading 1 style is:
- font size 14, red (other formattings remain blank)

When I am typing a series of texts:
Game Model <-- Arial font style, size 12, black, bold
.............
.............
.............

Says' Law <-- TNR font style, size 10, black, underline
.............
.............
.............

I wish to apply heading 1 style to the above headings.
The result will be:
Game Model <-- Arial, size #14, #red, bold
.............
.............
.............

Says' Law <-- TNR, size #14, #red, underline
.............
.............
.............
[# means change is made]

Can you see from the above?
What I just wish to change is:
1. font size
2. font color

All other formattings from the current text (which I wish
to apply built-in Heading 1 style to) should remain un
changed, or rather remain the same as what the current
text is.

In reality, when I apply built-in heading 1 style, not
only it changes font size, color, but also others which
are undesireable!!

How can I solve so?
[Please tell me step-by-step if possible, thanks !!]

Thank you very much for your nice answers.

Have you considered using a character style to override
certain font formatting while getting the rest from the
underlying paragraph style?

Given paragraphs formatted the way you described in a
previous post:

my thought was to have paragraph styles for each of these,
specifying the appropriate font name and attributes and
then a character style that stores font size and color.
Applying that character style would override the various
paragraph style settings for size and color, but not
anything else, assuming that the character style isn't
based on another style.

It's a good idea.

But when I try to change the formatting of the character
style, some problems occur:
- can't change back some options into "default"
(eg for "font size" option, I would like to leave it
blank, soo "font size" will not be changed when I apply
this style)

Optnios which can't changed back into "default":
- font color
- underline style
- underline color
- emphasis mark
- character spaciing | spacing
- character spaciing | position

How to do?

In the Modify style dialog box, you have the possibility to
simply select and delete the contents of the Font size box; this
should restore the font property to "inherit mode" (so that it
inherits its value from either the parent character style or the
underlying paragraph style). I do realize that this method cannot
be used for the underline option.

For a character style based on another character style (as
opposed to a character style using the settings of the underlying
paragraph style), however, it should be possible to modify any
setting so that it coincides with the parent style; and this
ought to bring the setting back to "inherit mode".
