how to apply background shading fill effects to whole document

I am trying to apply the "shading" fill effect to a background on a document
but instead of coming up with one effect for the whole document the effect
repeats itself over and over in a pattern creating a rippled or bumpy effect
depending on the fill effect used.

Check/change the setting for the Overtype mode under Tools>Options>Edit. Or
maybe the Tabs and Backspaces set Left and First Indent under
Tools>AutoCorrect>AutoFormat As You Type.
