How to backup a published website?

I have a published website that I need to backup before pulishing changes to
it.
Someone else wrote this website and now I have to make changes to it.
I cannot find information anywhere on backing up this published website.

Go to your host-serversite, than create a new folder rename it as i.e
myback28102007. Copy the originals and paste it into your Backup Map.
Download your Website_ files into your harddrive , and make the changes you
need..
