I'm using powerpoint 2002

I want to change the name of the design template that appears at the bottom
of the editing screen and appears under properties under the contents tab,
design template in list under that tab. I have saved the design template
under a new name, but the original design tempate I used is still listed in
properties and still shows on the editing screen. any help will be greatly
appreciated.

There is no relationship between the file name and the slide name of a template.
Open the POT file in PowerPoint. Go to View > Master > Slide Master. Right
click on the thumbnail on the left side pane. Select "Rename Master" and type
in the name you want. Do this for the Title master too, if you want and if
there is one. I like to name mine, for example, "Balance Slide" and "Balance
Title". Still in View > Master go to File > Save and save the file.

Sonia,
Thank You! I have been frustrated by this issue for a very long time but
didn't know where to go for help -- I didn't realize the name at the bottom
of the window was the name of the slide master. I very much appreciate your
help!

But . . . since PowerPoint 97 and 2000 do not support the use of multiple
masters, it isn't much of an issue. You've got a template called Bamboo.POT and
it has only one slide master and one title master, both called Bamboo. With
PowerPoint 2002 and 2003 it becomes very useful to be able to name the multiple
slide masters. I think I had 10 slide masters for PowerPoint Live last year.
Even had one named RnR Slide Master. <G>
