How to change follow-up flag as text field to icon field

When I click on my follow-up flag, I get the WORDS Follow up, instead of the
small red flag. If I open Format Columns, and click on Follow up, it only
offers a 'text' version. How do I get the red flag icon?

You need the flag status column, not the follow up column. I'd probably just
reset the view to restore it to the original settings - but you can add the
correct column using Field Chooser.
