How to change the "style" on the same line of text with Word.

I am using Word 2000 and formatting a document with multiple heading levels.
I need the heading and body text to start on the same line as shown below:

FLOOD PROTECTION. Restore the design level of protection and reduce flood
damages from sumps.

"FLOOD PROTECTION." would be heading 4, and the remaining would be body
text. But the only way I can have different styles is to insert a hard
return between them. Is there a way to have them on the same line?
