How to convert a doc in MSWord to Microsoft Office Word?

I received an email from MSWord. I have Microsoft Office Word. I was asked
to save the document. When I tried to open it, I received the command:
--.doc is not a valid Single File web page.

Microsoft Word is Microsoft Word. What is the extension on the file?
