How to display error message at top of form after Submit?

Hello...newbie here.

I have a simple form with a radio buttons that are required fields. I want
to accomplish two things:

1) display a custom error message at the top of the form after the user
submits the form
2) identify in some fashion (highlight) which radio button wasn't completed

Is there an easy way to accomplish this?
