How to find slide item numbers in a ppt2k file?

ThisIsNotMe

I have a word2000 doc with 100 links to slides in ppt files. The links are
created as icons. I want to change some of those links. I go to
"Edit|Links..." in the doc file and see a list of links. How do I know which
line goes with which icon in the doc file? When I click "Change Source" in
the "Edit|Links..." box I get a browser that eventually asks for the item
number that I want to change to. How do I know what the items numbers of the
slides are in the ppt files? I can find out by copying a slide and pasting as
a hyperlink into the doc file and then viewing "Field Codes" in the
Tools|Options" window. But that doesn't help me easily find which of 200 or
more slides belongs to a particular item number.

Hey Me,

Sorry that I am not able to help, but perhaps you could try the MS Word
newsgroup. They are more familiar with the fun and frustration of that
product.

Bill,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a whirl. But since this question is
a stand-alone ppt question I can just bet that they'll say "why don't you
post to the ppt group?"

I thought you were trying to change links (to PPT slides) in a Word document,
though. No?

Echo S,

That is correct. I can see how to do everything I need to do in Word. The
sticky point is in discovering the item numbers of the slides in a PowerPoint
file.

Ok, here we go.

The hyperlink format in MS Word for a link to a slide in a presentation is
usually:
Drive - path - presentation - slide number

For example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Bill\My Documents\Presentation X.ppt#25

But, this is a Word hyperlink to a presentation's slide, not a PowerPoint
anything. The tricks to using the Word links editor is not something I
would be comfortable suggesting to anyone. Luckily, there are some Word
experts that hang out in the Word newsgroup that may have some insight into
whole Word links editor thing.

When I look at the MS Word links editor it seems to me that, after a slide
is sent to Word using the PowerPoint 'send to word' feature, it uses the
slide's ID number, not the slide's slide number. I might be wrong, I do not
know Word or the Work Link Editor as well as I know PowerPoint. If all you
want to do is discover the slide ID numbers, then run this code from
PowerPoint. It will add the slide's ID number to the title of each slide.

----Begin Code-----

Sub ShowMyID()
Dim oSld As Slide
For Each oSld In ActivePresentation.Slides
With oSld.Shapes.Placeholders(1)
If .HasTextFrame = True Then
.TextFrame.TextRange.Text = _
CStr(oSld.SlideID) & " - " & _
.TextFrame.TextRange.Text
End If
End With
Next oSld

End Sub
-----End Code-----

Bill... Thanks so much for this. How do I run this in a ppt file? Just tell
me if this is a macro or a vb code or whatever and I'll research it from
there... don't want to waste your time; you've been quite helpful enough!

Thanks!!!
