how to increase from 4 to 9 previous files under FILE in Excel

Using EXCEL and clicking on file the previous 4 files opened are shown; can
this list be increased to say 9 or 10 files

In Tools | Options | General tab you can change the value of "Recently Used
File List" from 4 (in your case) to whatever you want.
