How to install Word 2000 on XP Home edition

T

Tanako

I just bought a new laptop with a trial version of MS Office 2003 on it. I
own the cd's of the MS Office 2000 version. Instead of ordering the 2003
version, I tried to install the 2000 version I already have. The installation
process stalls with a message: "Insert your Windows XP Professional Service
pack 2 cd now." I checked for such a download on the MS site. It is
recommended there not to download it for a SINGLE computer. It's for
networks. What should I do?????? Otherwise, I already successfully installed
that Office 2000 version on a Windows 98 computer!

No. A friend just gave it to me. And I installed it on my old computer
without a problem over a 97 version.

I repeat. It says: ""Insert your Windows XP Professional Service pack 2 cd
now."

And you're not supposed to download service pack 2 on a single computer
according to the MS site.....

Right-click "My Computer" and select Properties. Take a look at the
General tab. What version of Windows does it say you have installed?

Also, could you provide a link to the information you are referring to
on the MS site?

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.

I repeat "What does you DISK say?" I didn't ask what the error message was.

---It says on the download site: "DO NOT CLICK DOWNLOAD IF YOU ARE UPDATING
JUST ONE COMPUTER: A smaller, more appropriate download is now available on
Windows Update. The best way to ensure you get Windows XP Service Pack 2 is
by turning on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP today. You can use
our step-by-step instructions or, if you prefer, let us do it for you. "

Which I did. I downloaded a pack2, but only the smaller version. But it
still asks for the WXP "professional" service pack2 when I start the Office
2000 installation.

---The properties read :WXP home edition version 2002 with SP2

In response to Mary, I'll cut and paste this from the site: "L'utilitaire
Windows Installer CleanUp ne supprime pas les fichiers de tous les programmes
installés par Windows Installer, tels que Microsoft Office 2003. " (IOW, it's
efective except for MSO 2003!) I wouldn't rry that. I don't want to mess up
other programs and leave this one untouched!Someone else told me that I
should let the trial O.2003 expire AND JUST KEEP USING IT. He says it works
like that..... Any experience with that?

It came with Windows XP home ed. In My Comp and properties, it says "with
service pack 2" In Add/remove, there is no specific reference to the SP2.
Only a bunch of hotfixes and security stuff. What it asks is a PROFESSIONAL
service pack 2 cd. It's a different thing from the lighter SP2 available in
upgrades.

Someone told me that MS may bug their new operating systems to prevent
bootlegged program instalation and multiple installation of ONE key-coded cd
on several computers. That would be why it works on 98 or 2000, but not on
the latest editions of XP. Could that be true?

Thank you all for all your responses anyway. I may wait until the trial
version expires and see what happens

That's not an OS feature. One computer can't know that another computer has
used an OS - that's why you have to activate it online or over the phone.
And as long as you are using fully legal version of the software, it won't
apply, right?
