How to measure the quality of a project plan

Ramesh Dorairaj

Hi
I have heard that there are tools in the market that let you evaluate the
quality of a project plan by measuring the granularity of the tasks, the
tasks to dependent tasks ratio etc.., I would be grateful for any pointers on
this.
Thanks
Ramesh

Ramesh,
Take a look at the post in this newsgroup yesterday by Mike Oliver.

Is Google misleading me? I searched the NG for Oliver and sorted the
results by date, and show no posts by Mike Oliver since Jan. Did he
make a post yesterday?

Dave,
I don't know about Google, the search didn't work for me either. Perhaps
it is because Google takes several hours (maybe in this case more than a
day) to post messages. I use a newsreader and Mike's post shows up just
a couple of posts away from this one.

Putting aside the quest for tools to do it, how would you define and assess
the "quality" of a project plan if you had one in front of you?
What good and bad practices and characteristics would you look for?
Every day in the construction industry, contractors put plausible looking
Gantt Charts in tenders and progress reports and the fact that they are
rubbish can be discerned in 5 minutes without any software assistance, but
it never happens.
If it's got bars and finishes on the contract finish date it's never
questioned.
