How to open a document from a different Publisher edition?

I can't properly open a Publisher document I recieved. It appears blank and
asks me to choose the setting which displays the document correctly. None
work!

Generally a file that's created with a different version says that. It
doesn't ask you to choose a setting. Specifically what does the error
message say? Which version are you using?
