How to open files type .sxw

I can't open open office files from friends with the .sxw file type. I have
Windows 98se and office 97. Is there a stand alone free program that I can
down load to open such files.

I would guess you'd have to download Open Office.

In addition to Rob's advice, you can also have the sender of the file save
the file as a Word document before they send the files to you. You can do
this in Open Office.

And of course, Open Office is free to download from
http://www.openoffice.org/. This is your best bet since you won't lose any
formatting.
