Don't worry about it. Registration is optional and only lets you
subscribe to a newsletter.

Same answer. If you really want Microsoft Spam, try again in a few weeks
when they get the website fixed.

Asked and answered hundreds of times. A quick search should have given you
the answer.

Registeration is not required and serves no useful purpose. It will put you
on a Microsoft email list. You can sign up for the newsletter without
registering. http://www.microsoft.com/mac/newsletter.mspx

"Registration" has nothing to do with the operation of the software - unlike
the Activation required for MS Windows software. It's little more than a
marketing tool.

Thanks for all the confirmations on Office Mac 2008 registration ID failure. I thought it was another problem for me to solve along with others associated with setting up on my new iMac and with moving from a 2000 era PC.

Inauspicious indeed. Not wasting a support call on this registration, maybe they'll email us when they figure it out?

There have been various answers from Microsoft, but none they would want us
to share on a family radio station like this :)

Just ignore the problem: you do not need to register on the Mac. :)

Any answer from Microsoft ? Now what

Can someone explain why the 3 product keys in the mac home student version?

It allows you to install and use on 3 different computers in your home. A
standard version allows you to install on two computers (desktop and laptop)
but you can't use at the same time.

The registration problem has been fixed, however if anyone is still having any issues registering we'd appreciate hearing about it.

re: Word OSX--new in package; Product Key (25-character) doesn't work; I'm installing it on a different hard drive, which I wiped clean.

Hello to all,

I am somewhat desperate to fix this as I haven't had access to my files for over a month now.

I am using Firefox with OS 10.3.9 and Classic on a G4 PowerMac and the product key and registration process doesn't work for me at all.

I've tried booting into Mac OS 9.2.2, and clicking on a MS Word 2001 doc, but now I get the same error message.

I am embarassed to admit how much time I have spent trying to read the various forums for answers. In essence, people address that it doesn't work, but not many actually talk about the difference between Product Key Codes, CD Codes, and the fact the when you click on "about Word", that it gives only a 20-character product code.

I also tried deleting the invisible OfficePID files, to no avail. It has asked me for the same 25-character Product Key each time (though, as I mentioned, it actually says to enter your "CD Key".

Several posts indicate that the registration function is "broken" and that Microsoft knows about it. However, when I called, the tech support person told me to turn off "caps lock" when I typed in the 25-character code--didn't make a bit of difference; and since it is Word OSX (10.0.0), he said it was too old to get a valid product code.

I have been unable to get past the "registration page" of my Word for OSX applications; I've had Word on my computer in some form continuously since 1989; yet, I can't get it to accept the Product Code from the newly opened Word OSX, which worked fine, until I did a completely clean install onto an erased hard drive, with firmware updated.

Now, I can't open Office 2001 or Word Special Edition 2001; by the way, the only product with 25 characters is the Word OSX; however, the registration box that comes up requests the "CD Code" with space for 25 characters; so which is it---Product Code with 25 characers, CD code with 9 or 10 characters; or, my earlier versions of Office and Word which have me registered with 20-character codes.

The online forums and discussions all seem to say things like "you don't need to register--it just gives Microsoft your email address; or skip the registration, etc. But I CAN'T GET BEYOND THE automatic dialog that asks for a 25-character product code.

I can't even click on Word 2001 documents and get them to open, since I installed Word 2001 and Word 10.0.0 onto a single-volume hard drive.

Please tell me how to bypass this maddening dialog box; or, how to get a valid Office product key; the update disks for Office 2001 only has the CD key--and of course, doesn't work in the 25-character registration boxes.

Help--I've wasted so much time. Microsoft is a positive force in our area--so I haven't been one to complain--however, this one is a real bummer as I can hardly get through to their tech support line, and the guy was responding mostly that it was too old of a version--and not to what the problem was.

I like to use earlier versions for the exact reason that other people work out the bugs, and then I can go online and find out the fixes. In this case, the bug is on its back with little legs in the air--unable to make any progress.

.......

Please just ignore it. If you really want to get the enewsletter, which
is ALL that registration does, try back in a couple of weeks.
Hello,
I just lost my detailed explanation about 25-character product id code--though it asks for CD code--won't accept either--blocked from opening any Word document on all three versions I have:

2 have 20-character product id; one has 25-character that gives "invalid code" response.
I'm ready to spit rust........

earlier post I sent:

Hi Valerie:

No probs: your post made it out onto the newsgroup, twice. So we do indeed
have it :)

I am a little lost in the detail here, but it sounds as though you have two
versions of Office on your computer: Office 2001 and Office X.

I suspect you may also have a third, which you did not put there: Office
2004 Test Drive.

As is usual, the latest version takes over the file associations, and that's
the version that is asking for a CD Key. The problem is that the computer
needs various files to indicate the correct lists of components to start,
and somehow, that list has become confused. It sounds to me as though the
calls from any of the Office applications (either 2001 or X) are calling the
wrong key checker.

Let's go for some radical surgery, since there is nothing to lose. Work
very carefully, double-checking everything. We're going to do a series of
deletions, and if you are not careful, you will lose data. So be careful
:)

First, let's make sure that all the OS X System updates have applied
properly. Download the 10.3.9 Combo patch from Apple and run it.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxcombinedupd
ate1039.html

Next: we need to get a Microsoft update and save it for later. If you do
not already have a copy, go to the main Microsoft website and download the
Office 10.1.9 Updater. Here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=fea9fd8a-ea16-4b3c-
9381-18a389d5599a&displaylang=en

That URL is all one line. You can't see this update from the Mactopia
website, so don't go to the wrong place :) Just drop it on the OS X
desktop and leave it for now.

In OS X, look in the Applications folder. Delete any file or folder in
there that has "Microsoft" in its name.

Now go to the root of your hard disk and look in there for the Users folder.
In there, find your login name, and in that find the "Library" folder. Open
the "Preferences" folder in there and again, remove any file folder that has
Microsoft in its name.

Empty the Trash, then boot into OS 9.

Now, re-install Office 2001. That should get Office 2001 to work without
further blasphemy. Start each Office 2001 application EXCEPT Entourage, let
it complete its startup, then quit it.

Do not try to start Entourage: It will not be able to read the current
database.

Now re-boot into OS X. Perform an installation of Office X using the
Drag-and-Drop method, into the Applications folder. Don't run anything yet.

When the installation completes, DISCONNECT any external drives you may have
connected (including any on the Internet...). This prevents the system
"finding" any strange versions.

Now, run the 10.1.9 updater you downloaded earlier. Let it complete.

Now start one of the Microsoft Office X applications by going into the
Applications folder and double-clicking the application in there. Read that
again. If you don't do it exactly that way, you will trash the process and
get to start again. Double-click the Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel
application within the Applications:Microsoft Office folder.

If you try to start the application any other way at this stage, strange
things may happen. We are trying to cause the core application to start and
re-write the System's file associations table.

Now, it's going to ask for that dreaded 25-character key: so have it handy
and type it carefully :)

If we get lucky, that will be the end of your troubles. If not: Well, it's
a short drive out to Redmond, right?

Hope this helps
