how to upgrade Office Basic to Office Pro?

J

Joe

I did something stupid about 2 years ago. I ordered a Dell and thought I was
ordering it with Office Pro. I ordered that computer to be a backup system-
periodically backing up files to it over a peer to peer network- and in case
my other Dell died, I'd have a system ready to use.

I didn't notice until recently that the second Dell came instead with Office
Basic. I really don't know if I made the mistake or the Dell sales agent
made the mistake and I just stupidly didn't catch it. What I'm missing of
course is Access and possibly some other programs.

In any case- how can I upgrade this system to Office Pro? Is an upgrade
version of Office Pro going to successfully upgrade a previous version of
Office Basic? Or would I first have to purchase Access? The computer came
with Office 03.

I'd like to upgrade to Vista next year- and, I believe an Office 2007 is
coming out?

What to do- what to do? (in case my primary system dies, I'll certainly need
Access on the second Dell- I really don't care what version it is- but I
want to do this in the most economically effective way)

I did kinda the same thing (actually I had Office 2003 STE but needed
Access), I took a chance and just bought just the Access 2003 Upgrade and
"something" on this machine allowed it to install without a problem. Your
mileage may vary, so you might wanna wait for the pros to weigh-in on this.

Wht do you have on your primary system for Office? Did you purchase that at retail? If it is Office Pro 2003 purchased at retail, it allows for an installation to a portable in addition to your desktop.

BTW - Office Basic 2003 does not qualify for Office 2003 upgrade editions, IIRC.

Hi Joe,

With the MS Office 2007 products Microsoft is supporting using an upgrade package within the same product series (2007) (commonly
known as a 'crossgrade').

For Office 2003 those upgrade packages only recognize an earlier version of Office.

Office 2007 will be available for download on a trial basis in early December and the retail products will be in stores early next
year.

On the Access Upgrade package, it does list several versions of Office,
including Standard- but the guy at Staples said, "oh, no, if you don't have
a previous version of the particular program, it aint gonna work". But,
based on what the box said, and you're having done it- it must be true,
right?

Yes, it worked for me, but dunno if it will for you..there's the possibility
that something else on my machine (can't imagine what) that qualified for
the upgrade.

I took the chance because I have scads of old version CDs and could have
fallen back on another old Access CD if I had to - quite frankly I WAS
surprised that it worked.

hmmm.... well, I have Office Pro on another computer, but-- I wouldn't think
that I could use that- since when I register Access from it- won't MS
discover that it's going on a different computer?
