HOWTO: Fix Word 2000 Clip Art in Windows Vista

M

MH

Issue:
When you attempt to use the clip art gallery in Windows Vista, when running
under a normal user account, you may encounter an error message that Word
2000 is unable to open the clip art gallery.

Probable cause:
1) Word 2000 appears to create the artgal50.mmc (Microsoft Art Gallery 5.0
Media Catalog) the first time the user attempts to use clip art, in
\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Catalog. Word 2000 cannot
create this file in non-administrator accounts.
2) Deletion of this file after creation does not seem to affect Word 2000's
ability to utilize clip art.
3) This problem does not occur in Windows XP.

Remedy:
1) Go to Control Panel, click "Administrative Tools," right-click "Computer
Management," select "Run as administrator."
2) Under "Computer Management, expand "System Tools," expand "Local Users
and Groups," open "Users," double-click the user account.
3) Under the "Member Of" tab, highlight "Users," and press the "Remove"
button."
4) Click "Add," click the "Advanced" button," click the "Find Now" button,"
select "Administrators," press "Ok," "OK," and "Ok" to return to the Computer
Management window.
5) Log off
6) Log on
7) Open Microsoft Word 2000.
8) Attempt to insert clip art. You will receive an error message that
artgal50.mmc may be set to read-only.
9) Click the Windows start button, and type "artgal50.mmc" into the search
box. Right-click "artgal50.mmc," select the "Security" tab.
10) Select the user, click "Edit," set file permissions to "Full control."
11) Click "Ok," and "Ok" to close out the artgal50.mmc Properties window.
12) Repeat steps 1-6, this time removing "Administrators" and replacing with
"Users." It is not necessary to select "Run as administrator" for accessing
Computer Management, as you are currently running as an administrator.

Note: It is likely the above will solve the same clip art issue in other
Office 2000 programs.
