Hyperlink between slides

Help.
I am creating a powerpoint presentation where I need to input a figure in
the first slide (in an excel woorksheet within the slide) and use that
figure in other slides where I have excel worksheets. The hyperlink or copy
as link commands do not work.
Can someone help me?

Why not use copy in Excel and then Edit/Paste Special in PPT?

I may be misunderstanding or underestimating the problem here but...
Wouldn't you do the linking of cells in worksheets in excel (perhaps
creating a different worksheet in the same workbook for each slide) where
you can easily copy a cell and paste link its contents; then you could copy
the relevant bits from the worksheets and paste link them onto the slides..?
You'd need to keep both the PowerPoint and the Excel files, though, but I
don't see any other way that you could maintain the links between slides.
