Hyperlinks in Entourage

I have had difficulty in figuring out how to embed hyperlinks in Entourage 2008. I have since come to realize that even though they don't show up in the body of the email as more than text, once they are sent they do go out as a hyperlink. So keep using them as it is faster than going to word and cutting and pasting from there.

Thanks for your suggestion. I'm wondering if you've had any difficulty receiving hyperlinks within email messages? I can't automatically click on a link; I have to cut and paste. Any suggestions will be helpful, I'm sure.

If you can't click a link, then try Command-click to launch. If you have a
link that doesn't work, post an example.

I think the inability to enter a hyperlink into an email message in Entourage is well known. I do realize that on the receiving end the link shows and is active.

I do however receive calendar entries that were forwarded... most notably conference call invitations where the link arrives in email as text-only. I have to say that I don't like having to copy and paste these links into Safari in order to attend the meeting, and this occurs all the time with each meeting I attend!

For Diane, as an example, here is a sanitized version of one of those un-enabled links (sorry but I can't provide the actual link in an online community):

---------------------------------------
Click on <http://meetingplace1.xxxxx.gov/mpaudio.asp?999999> to confirm your phone number and have MeetingPlace call you.
---------------------------------------

I also miss the ability to present a hyperlink that has a text label as you can do in Outlook, Word, etc. This is the ability to insert a hyperlink and specify a more "English-like" name.

Why can't we have this in Entourage? I know it has been officially requested as an enhancement/feature;I've done this myself. I thought the idea was to welcome PC users into the Mac community with Mac Office being one of the prime movers? Hyperlinks such as this are a real productivity booster.

And one other thing... I haven't seen it on this thread but I don't find the "Real Mac users don't need this" comment I've read elsewhere as a very useful argument.

Thanks!

Hmmm... Evidently Safari was able to translate my example and show it s a hyperlink. ;-) LOL

If you can "forward as attachment" to me some examples off list, I'll test
them and get them to a developer If I can reproduce.

Send me an email:

Plain Text vs HTML is one of the most debatable topics around. I think if
people were a bit more judicious in their use of HTML it would make it more
palatable.

The next version of Entourage might include this, but right now it's a
guess. The only thing you can do is send feedback to MSFT.

What was the browser that wasn't working?

Hi Diane,

I'll forward my email with the calendar request. Regarding your last question, I used Safari both times. I was contrasting Safari as having the ability to post my link and have it appear here as a hyperlink with Entourages' inability to do so.

Hi Diane,

Yes, I visited the page at this link and clicked on the "send me an email" link, which opened a new email message in Entourage.

With this last message I also copied the alternate address you provided above.

Thanks!

In my job as an assistant I am required to send emails on behalf of many
clients and a lot of these have hyperlinks. After my initial excitement of
moving to a Mac I was very upset that a client pointed out to me that my
emails looked very message due to the hyperlinks and display text both
turning up and confusing everyone. Thank goodness for Apple Scripts, as at
least someone has been able to find a solution of sorts to this problem.
This guy has a script that you unzip, put in the Entourage folder and you can
add any links and display text that are 'permanent' for you or if you type in
the full URL, when you run the Script before sending, it will ask you what
display text you would like. For example, if I want to say "click here for
examples" that's how it will show, rather than the 50 characters of the URL.
It's not a perfect world, but this makes it a little easier to use Entourage.
Now - if only we could get a good way to use html signatures - but one step
at a time. Hope this helps people who are searching out there.

I'm a Mac user with Entourage and can't click on a hyperlink in email and go to the website. It's only been in the last 4 months that I've had this problem. I'm wondering if somehow I may have disabled something on my laptop in Entourage or through Safari. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hold the Command key when clicking on the link. Usually this is a random
occurrence. One option that might help is to apply the latest Apple combo
updater. Combo updaters go back and repair files that might have become
corrupt. It might not help, but it's good medicine for your computer.

Using Combo:
You might need to download the combo updater from Apple and run it again
rather than using Software Update. Doing so overwrites potentially
problem-causing files. Several users have reported this fixed some odd
problems they were having with Entourage. Combo updaters will install on the
same version as they¹re applying‹no need to roll back or do a clean install.

Leopard:

Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update
(For both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs )

Tiger:

Mac OS X 10.4.11 Combo Update (PPC)

I tried the command click and also downloading the Apple Combo but my computer (it's a MAC OS X 10.3.9) said it wouldn't let me download the 10.5.5. Apple Combo because "The Bill of Materials for this package was not found." What now? Is my computer so hopelessly outdated that I'm out of luck completely? I just don't understand how it all of a sudden stopped linking to the websites.

You are pretty behind the times with the OS. :)

Mac OS X Update 10.3.8 (Combo)
<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1038combo.html>

You will then need to download the 10.3.9

<http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1039.html>

Have you tried in a new User? Go to System Preferences --> Create a New User
in Accounts. Switch to the New User by logging out/in or use Fast User
Switching. Test there.

you won't be able to apply the 10.3.8 updater over an installed copy of
10.3.9

you would have to reinstall 10.3 (use an archive and install), then
apply the 10.3.8 combo updater and then 10.3.9 delta updater.

to be honest, it's a lot of hassle and isn't all that likely to fix the
problem you are seeing.

You don't say what version of office you are running - I'm guessing vX
or 2004? - some early versions of these had problems with links in
complex HTML messages (especially 2004). This is likely the problemn you
are seeing and it is a bug in Entourage rather than a damaged installation.
