I am editing a Word document. How do I remove unwanted lines?

I have Office XP. I am editing an e-mail document which has several lines on
it which I wish to remove. I have tried all combinations of delete etc
without success.

If Track Changes is enabled, you may not see editing changes unless you
switch to Final view.
