I can't make the caption feature stop numbering

I would like to title my table in my document, but there
is no need for a number. "Help" says I need to go
Insert/Reference/Caption/Auto Caption and uncheck the
boxes for things I don't want automatically numbered --
but when I do that, there are NO boxes checked to begin
with.

If I try to title (caption) my table "My Table", the
program automatically makes it "My Table 1" and won't let
me delete the number. How do I get rid of these numbers?

If you don't want to number the tables, then why are you using the Caption
feature? Why not just give it a title using a custom Table Title style?

Because I didn't know any better, and I couldn't figure
it out from the help screens.
