A document (it probably got saved as a template ) seems to have replaced the
normal.dot template in startup of Word. Whenever I click on File, New or the
blank document icon I get this document that was created earlier. How do I
get back to a blank document when I open Word?

Locate the normal.dot file. Delete it and re-open word. A
new normal.dot file will be created.

We don't ever recommend deleting Normal.dot, which could cause users to lose
years' worth of customization. Renaming is sufficient for the purpose and
permits most customizations to be retrieved using the Organizer.
