I don't understand what the Jounal Timer is for?

I see in the help that the jounal timer tells the duration of the
journal...but what does that mean exactly? Could someone give me a concrete
example. What are you timing?

Whatever you want to assign the time to. Open a journal entry start the
timer Call the client, end the call, pause the timer, duration of call
is displayed.
