I have gone and set the printer to print background, and have set the
background which shows up in web view, but when I go to print preview or save
the word document as a pdf, the background does not show up. Does anyone
know how to go about getting this work?

Hi Kira-

Word's Backgrounds are intended for screen display in docs, email & web
pages only. They _do not_ print, which is why they don't show up in print
preview.

By "I have gone and set the printer to print background" do you mean that
you checked the box for "Background printing" on the Print tab of Tools |
Options? If so, this option doesn't mean what you think it does. This just
tells Word to print "in the background." Only in Word 2003 is there an
option to "Include with document: Background colors and images." Format |
Background creates a background for Web pages; the only way to get it to
print (other than in Word 2003) is to save the document as a Web page, open
it in your browser, and change the browser settings to print backgrounds.

If you want a background that will print, you need to use what Word calls a
"watermark." In Word 2002/2003, there is a Format | Background: Printed
watermark feature (though this has limited application). For more on
creating a watermark by hand, see “HOW TO: Create a Watermark in Word 97 and
in Microsoft Word 2000â€
