I want Document Elements Toolbar GONE!!!

I don't know why Microsoft feels the need to clutter a document with excessive garbage, but one new feature in 2008 is the toolbar that has "Document Elements, " "Quick Files," and so forth. Does anyone know how to make this waste of space disappear? Or is t his another force-feeding by Microsoft?

I will assume by your response that there is no way to remove it. It's a shame that Microshaft continually finds ways of treating Mac users like crap, and for some reason, we keep taking it. If only Pages would modify/add three features, I would switch in a heartbeat.

Do you feel like burping now! :-(

They are oodles of people that have the same feelings.

There was talk of figuring out a way to hide it. But don't know if it
got pass the big honchos or not. Sorry.

I've come to a better conclusion, if I can only get the scratch up to buy it: I'm switching to Nissus Writer Pro. Downloaded a free trial version, and fell in love rather easily. I'll keep Word around as an emergency back up, but other than that, Microshaft can take this bloated turd of a program and give it back to the fools still choosing to run Windblows.

I think most of us would like the option to turn the Elements Gallery off
altogether, but I'm not sure what exactly you're referring to. No,
regrettably the buttons of the Elements Gallery cannot be hidden or removed.
If you haven't already done so, however, you can go to Word> Preferences -
Gallery & remove the check that determines whether the Gallery panel
displays or not on launch. Once that check is removed clicking a Gallery
button displays the Gallery, clicking the active button again hides it.

I won't try to convince you that the Gallery buttons are "indispensible" -
that's everyone's option to decide for themselves - but FWIW the oval button
at the right end of the Title bar collapses the entire Toolbar space (except
for the Gallery buttons, of course :)) and frees up far more vertical space
than the Gallery buttons usurp.

Pages doesn't work with at least Office 2008 and may not Office2004.
There was a nice discussion on this list yesterday why Pages and Office
don't Gee/Haw together (don't work/butt heads).

Have you actually *tried* using Pages Phillip?

You know, like before mouthing off?

Pages does a damn fine job of reading .docx, but it does not write it.
But who cares?
It saves .doc pretty well.

Pages does so many things better than Word 2008 does. Indeed Word 2008
looks like what would happen if somebody tried to make a cheap
knock-off of Pages starting with Word 2004 codebase and the problem of
shifting it to a Cocoa framework with a pathetically inadequate budget
and an unrealistic time to ship date.

For the record, given time and headcount, I think the coders did a very
creditable job. I'm less impressed with the product management side.

Somebody should have compared the old and the new, and slipped the ship
date by at least 12 months.

Hi Elliott -

Sorry to not have been able to intercept before Phillip got your dander up,
but I don't believe he meant to write "Pages" - the discussion &
incompatibility he's referring to involves Office 2008 & **Spaces**.

Yep what I was referring to. If I said Pages my apologies I meant spaces. I'd be
willing to try pages just for a look see. :-(

Oh, what a pity that a bit of dyslexia got in the way of a good stoush. I
was about to add to the melee. ;-)

In fact, Elliott, I was about to suggest a re-launching of your famous
saying of yore, updated as: "Word 2004 was such an improvement on its
successor". But I won't now.

Ho-ho.

Oops! Sorry Phillip. I should have checked the rest of the thread. You
did say something about there being a long discussion, and I didn't go
back to read it. I don't visit here as often as I once did.

Still, if you could forgive the personal attack, the rest of it *was* a
fine rant.

Pages is an interesting product. It elegantly meets many of the
pointy-clicky design goals that seem to have influenced the new look
of Word.

Oh, go on. I was saving it for later. It is not fair to criticise
unfinished work.

And you did see where I would be quite willing to give pages ago if I
ever get to the point I can use OSX.5. or 6 or whatever by the time I
can afford to be able to get a new Mac. I'll take donations of a nice
first run Intel machine that doesn't have any bugs in it. I don't need
the latest 10mhz xenon model they probably have out by now ;-)
