iCal sync does not work in Entourage 2008

D

Disgruntle Apple User

I can't sync my iCal calendar at all in 2008. I have sync turned in preferences.
It does not show me any options to choose which calendar to sync. Same
on my Macbook. The address book does sync even though that doesn't show
up to. I have tried creating a new identity and I get the same thing.
At the moment this is unusable.

Hello all Blackberry customers. I to have the same problem and I also have the same problem and I have a Palm Treo. I was told by Palm that microsoft has not set up an installer for blackberry and treo. Will keep you posted when I am notified about the installer.

You won't get an installer for a conduit for Office 2008. MS decided to
exclusively use SyncServices. From now on, they sync to the "Truth"
database (used by iCal and the System address book) and that's what you
are supposed to use to sync.

Well, Microsoft has finally harassed anoter Office for Mac user into switching platforms to Windoze.

Am tired of maintaining Entourage 2004 and 2008 on my Mac just so I can sync to my PDA, and am about to install Palm OS on my Windoze Vista machine to synch with Outlook 2007 over there. Got a job in a Windoze environment and am tired of e-mailing all of my appointments to my Mac, so it isn't only about lack of a separate conduit. The "Truth" hurts. I absolutely despise Apple iApps and always have, and really resent being forced to use them with Office 2008. >:-<

You judge too harshly. I love the Mac- and Office for the Mac as well. I have never loved Apple's separate (although inter-tied) applications of Apple Mail, Apple Address Book, Apple Calendar, and iSync.
Entourage allows smoother integration of mail and PIM functions, and the third party application, Missing Sync for Palm OS does an excellent job of using the Entourage 2004 conduit. But that's four years old!

I don't understand why the Microsoft Mac Business Unit could not work with MarkSpace (publishers of Missing Sync, and yes, they do modern devices like smart phone and not just dinosaurs like Palm Pilots) to develop a new conduit for Entourage 2008, instead of forcing us to use the Mac OS applications. Here is an analogy that Windows-haters might not understand (My Windows machine is not the computer of choice, folks): Outlook for 2007 does not sync to Palm Pilots using the Windows operating system or accessories. Instead, users have to buy the separate third-party Chapura PocketMirror software to use Outlook with their Palms. If Microsoft Office for Windows can do it that way on their side, I don't understand why the Mac BU cannot develop a similar arrangement on the Mac side.
I will gladly go back to Entourage 2008 and not use Outlook for Windows to sync my Palm just as soon as Microsoft does something like that.

I suspect that they wanted a unified solution that would work for
everything. SyncServices allow you to sync through .Mac, iSync to mobile
devices and cell phones, iPhones, and a Palm using the Apple conduits.

As far as I am cncerned, using SyncServices is a good idea. The problem
is not SyncServices, it's the way the data syncs with it.
I'm not even talking about bugs, I'm referring to the fields that won;t
sync (eg: contact pictures) and the fact that you can't map categories
in Entourage to anything.

Has anyone been able to sycn through entourage 2008 and an iPhone....i
think there is a major bug where any calender added on the iphone will
not be synced on entourage. I have now tried this on 3 computers all of
which have the same effect. I have no had to resort back to 2004. Please,
if anyone has been able to do this, i would love to know...

It's happened to me, too. I can put something in Entourage and it ends up on the iPhone, but not vice versa.

Have you used Sync Services before (in Entourage 2004)? Entourage has
a rather idiosyncratic approach to calendar synching; if Sync Services
is turned on, a new calendar is created in iCal, called "Entourage". Events
created in Entourage show up in that calendar, and if you create events
in iCal, they need to be in that calendar as well or else they won't show
up in Entourage. If you want to get items from iCal into Entourage, you
now know what to do: right-click them and put them into the "Entourage"
calendar. Many users would prefer if they could set up Entourage to synch
categories to iCal calendars; if that sounds like what you would like
to have as well, click on Send Feedback on Entourage inside Entourage's
help menu to let Microsoft know.

Michael-

I am using office 2008 with iphone (mobile me), macbook and pc with outlook.

I don't even get the OUTLOOK calendars syncing to entourage??? iphone, ical, and outlook all sync fine but entourage has no events other than the few created in entourage.

Isn't there something wrong with that??

thanks

I had Entourage/iCal/iPhone syncing working SORT OF okay.

Items entered anywhere would sync to all other locations.

The problem I had was that intermittently iCal would lose EVERY Entourage
event for a number of seconds or minutes and then reappear again.

When this happened it took everything off my iPhone, not very
productive!!!!!!

They did reappear again EVENTUALLY.

So I have given up on this route for now.

Currently I am trying a direct Exchange sync and that does not work properly
either!!!!!

Anything added in Entourage gets to Outlook on my VM and to my iPhone.

Anything added in VM gets to my iPhone but not to Entourage.

Anything added on the iPhone gets to Outlook but not to Entourage.

What a bloody mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the abuse, not a happy bunny.(

still having problems getting the information to Entourage: I understand what you are saying about syncing ical and entourage. I have found the 'Entourage' calendar in Ical. My problem is that i want to get the information that is in the 'Entourage' calendar in Ical into the actual Entourage calendar in Entourage. How do I do that? thanks.

well, it should happen automagically when you turn on sync services in
Entourage. However, sync services is seriously broken in Office
2008/Leopard (I don't know which is to 'blame' - probably a combination)
and having set ups that don't work is all too common, unfortunately.

Try turning sync off in entourage and in the system prefs (choose the
'mobile me prefs pane, the 'sync' tab then click on 'advanced' and
'reset sync data')

Restart the mac then turn on sync in system prefs first, then in
Entourage after 1 hours has elapsed (to give the system time to settle
down first).

Barry,

After I did a clean install of Leopard 10.5 and Entourage 2008 I was finding that I would enter an appointment or event (especially reoccurring ones) the entry would show up in iCal for a minute and then disappear.

I spent a ton of time with both Microsoft and Apple support on the issue.

The mutual consensus was that the issue was a Microsoft issue and not an Apple one and that MS needed to do a fix to resolve the problem. Since then they have issued patches but from what I acn tell none have addressed this problem.

I know that you are not a MS employee. I would hope that MS has given MVP's a way to provide feedback on issues that need addressing. Given the length of this thread and that it has existed for so long if you have a way to give them feedback I know we would all appreciate it.

I have done the "Feedback" thing but I suspect many more need to and maybe a MVP could help move them

Thanks for your time on the forum!

Believe me. MVPs have been pretty vocal about this and sent all the
feedback they could to anyone who would listen...

It doesn't mean that a solution can be developed immediately though. We
are not aware of the technical complexities involved here, but we sure
let MS know about the problems.

MS also diligently reads what they receive through the Feedback
mechanism. It also really helps porioritizing things: The more people
complain about something specific, the highest priority it gets.

Dear Michael: Greetings, I have a question about one-note. Will there be a version for the MAC. I'd love to have it in this operating system. Thanks

M

Mickey Stevens

There is no version of One Note available for Mac. Word does now have a
Notebook Layout View that provides some basic note-taking features. I don't
know of any plans to add One Note to the Office for Mac package, but if
there were, you'd hear about it at <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/>

100% clear from my own weeks of trying in vain, and from all the comments above: Entourage 2008 simply does not sync with iCal. Unless you work in an organization which uses Exchange, you can pretty much forget about syncing your Entourage calendar information on to your iPhone.

It doesn't cost much to communicate. Does Microsoft plan to do anything to fix the problem? So disappointing that they remain silent. There are probably tens of thousands of customers out here wasting time trying to get this to work.

iPhone sales are massive. Unless something changes fast I predict a market move away from Microsoft Entourage.

And when oh-so-easy syncing with iPhone has been touted as an Entourage selling point, I wonder if disappointed purchasers won't consider starting a class action.

My Entourage 2008 just lost its entire Calendar and To-Do's. They remain in iCal in the Entourage Calendar there. The sync software for Entourage keeps failing and needs to restart. Over the last two to three days, Entourage has produced on average three error messages per hour that I have sent to Microsoft. Currently, I have sent Entourage to only sync with iCal and to have iCal items replace Entourage items. Does Microsoft have both an explanation of how this happened and a solution?

P

Peter

I am at the point to run XP + Office XP thru Parallels, though I miss BlueTooth and have to sync thru a cable again and thru iTunes (is that really Apple??, so much for an open disk)
Apple, Msoft they all promise heaven on earth. But basically the products don't work.

T

Tony

I was able to get the Entourage and iCal to synch for a few months. Then I started using MobileMe. Now Entourage launches the error and report message, and I get no synchronization. Microsoft send some support info that instructed deleting a Library file, but that did not help. So I can not automatically get Entourage into my iPhone through iCal now. The only way that works is to periodically import from Entourage to iCal using the iCal import function, deleting the original Entourage database, and then renaming the new database as Entourage from the imported Entourage 2. Very kludgey and tough to do. So I live with a not-up-to-date iPhone calendar. ANyone who has a solution would be a hero.
