Icons in word 2004

R

Richard Tomkins

At various times while using word, the cursor icon changes to different
things, like when the cursor is in the header area of the page it looks like
a page with a displaced header on it¹s top.

Is there something or some document somewhere that tells you what all these
different icons mean?

Thanks and regards, rtt

Hi Richard:

No. But there should be!

Use Help>Send Feedback to let them know that you want one! A whole section
has so far been missed from the Mac Word help: "Getting Started: User
Interface conventions."

In the meantime, see if this helps:

Or this:

Thanks for that.

No matter what tool is out there to use, there always seem to be
shortcomings in design, execution and documentation.

I believe that particular icon only shows up when Word | Preferences |
Edit "enable click and type" is checked. The usual click-and-type icon
is an I-beam with lines next to it--it switches to a header in the
header area, not sure why.

Click-and-type means "click anywhere in the page and Word will insert
the necessary enters, tabs, spaces to get you there." It can be useful
in quick single-use documents but otherwise may just help drive you crazy.

Could it possibly be because your in the section of the document where
the header/footer would be and double clicking in that area brings up
the header/footer editor???

I guess. I didn't realize that only worked with click and type on, but
it seems to.

I've switched to header footer in Word for years (of course I was in the
mode that show like its going to be typed) by moving above with mouse
the first line of main text for that page or the last sentence on that
page for footer

a semi gray doted line box appear and the mouse icon change to a
header/Footer Icon. double clicking brings up the header/footer editor.
