Icons on desktop changed

A couple of the desktop icons changed to a generic icon. When I look at
properties the old icon appears as the icon being used. Just before this
happened there was some sort of pulse (don't know how to describe it) visible
on the monitor. Only 2 out of many icons were changed. I tried to reset
them but they remain the same. Any ideas why and how to reset?

Two seperate inhouse database programs, I was able to change the icons but
not to the ones I had been using. Today one of the icons reverted back to
the generic icon and again the properties show the icon I had changed it to.
