I've been messing around with desktop icons and now suddenly all my Word
files have a new strange icon..

How do I revert to the standard one?

The quickest way is probably to reregister Word.

At the Start | Run prompt, type:

winword /r

and press Enter. Note that there is a space before the forward slash.
