I wondered of a problem I am having with a friend's Word

If I click on a page full of graphics whilst in preview
mode, the graphics sometimes display, mostly don't, and
sometimes only partially display, depending on the zoom
%. Word is frequently, but not always, slow to open a
document containing a graphic.
The computer I have the use of is a brand new Pentium 4
with 512 MB of RAM, and is on a network.
Word's lack of speed is very annoying, and can even occur
when there is nothing else open. Vet is also on the
machine, and I wondered if there could be some kind of
conflict with it (there are apparently some issues when
Word is used on the same machine as McAfee)?
Like your experience, Word often does open OK, but the
graphics disappear in Preview mode.
