Images Flipped (Mirrored) In Different Word Versions

J

James

I have a file with images that I printed to PDF using Mac Office 2008. The
..DOC looks just fine:
http://img505.imageshack.us/my.php?image=maczo2.jpg
However, when I copied this file to my Vista PC using Windows Office 2008,
it looked like this:
http://img368.imageshack.us/my.php?image=winzm1.jpg

As you can see, some of the images are mirrored on the vertical axis. This
occurs sporadically throughout the document. I have no way of fixing these
images in Word 2008 on Vista. Any ideas what is going on here?

Hi James,

There were some odd issues along these lines in earlier Word versions.

What version were these files created in originally?
What is the original Graphic type and how are you inserting in the document?

(FWIW, the Windows version of Office is 2007, which is what I assume you're using on that OS?)

It was a mix of .JPGs, .PNGs, .TIFs, and .GIFs; most were .JPGs though. All
of the pictures were drag-and-dropped into the document on Mac OS X Word
2008. Everything looked great until I opened the document with Word 2007 on
my Compaq running Vista.

Hi James,

It may be something similar to what is covered in the White Paper in this article for an earlier version of Word.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822228/en-us?FR=1
Can you provide a link to the document (before and after opening in Word 2007, if you resaved it after opening it) as you did with
the pictures?

Here is the file, which looks fine on my Mac (Office 2008) and mixed on my
Vista (Office 2007). I wasn't sure where else to upload so sorry for the ads
and wait time.

I took a look at the white paper. Everything is up to date on my Vista PC so
I'm thinking the flipped image bits might have been set permanently when I
saved the file in Office 2008 on my Mac. I saved it as a .DOC, the older
version, because my friends who have Office 2004 for Mac can't open certain
XML Office files even with the Mac XML converter.

Thanks again for all of your help! :)

Hi James,

[adding a cross post to Word:mac discussion group for input/comment to see if this looks familiar (i.e. some graphics used in a Word:2008 mac document appear flipped in Word 2007]

In looking through the file content from the link below, briefly, I'm guessing that the issue may be on the Mac side, in that it may not be showing the flip, as was the case in instances of earlier Word versions, as mentioned in the white paper previously mentioned. The 'flip' appears in Word 2003 and in Word 2007 when opening your document. I'm planning to mention this to the MS folks, but need a bit more information. Can you reproduce it in a new document, for example, using just the one picture mentioned below add it by [method?] and provide the steps you used? (i.e. create new in Word:mac 2008, save as (format(?)) then open in Word 2007 and get a flip?

What file format do you save in from Word:mac 2008 and does it make a difference is you save in, .docx vs the .doc format you uploaded (or other format) then reopen it in Word:mac 2008?

There are 6 pictures that are flipped in the x-axis, 2 PNGs and 4 JPEGs). In looking through the underlying document structure each of those six, in the file you sent include the 'flip:x' attribute in the XML, while none of the other pictures have that attribute. In other words, Word has been 'told' that this graphic is to be flipped when displayed. This tends to happen more with drag and drop/paste graphics than insert from file ones, but not uniquely. You mentioned that the documents were created from scratch in the 2008 version. If in a prior version there can be some carry over.

For example, the first 'flipped' graphic in your document is under part
"Insufflate for mobility of tympanic membrane"

The XML for that document for the graphic (Image7.PNG) includes the following for defining how to display that picture in your document.

================
<w:r>

<w:pict>

<v:shape id="_x0000_i1030" type="#_x0000_t75" style="width:129.75pt;height:180pt;flip:x">

<v:imagedata r:id="rId11" o:title="" />

</v:shape>

</w:pict>

</w:r>

===============================
If I remove flip:x from the document, resave it and open it in Word the picture is back to 'normal' (i.e. the text in the picture is now readable rather than as in a mirror).

There is a conversion template being used (Normal_Wordconv.dotm), presumably on the Word:mac side, but I think that it would come into play too late to be the cause of this.

The Registry fix that applied to Word 2002 and 2003 for this shouldn't be needed in Word 2007
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312838?FR=1

It would also be possible (for those that write VBA on the PC side or the equaivalent for Macros(?) on the Word:mac 2008 side, to search and unflip the graphics).

When I took the file and saved it to .DOCX on my Mac (Office 2008), the
images flipped. Now the Mac .DOCX looks like the Windows (Office 2007) .DOC
version. So it seems that the Windows Office 2007 is doing what it should;
even if the file is old it shows it with the correct mirror bits. It looks
like the Mac Office 2008 version is the problem, since it shows the .DOCX
file with flipped images but ignores the bits in .DOC.

I tried some test files. As you mentioned, it only happens when I drag in
images. Also, the file has to be currently saved as a .DOC version. Some
things I did:
1) Open a blank document in Mac Word 2008 and drag pictures in. If I save
the file as a .DOCX, things seem to be fine.
2) Open a blank document in Mac Word 2008 and save it as a .DOC. Then drag
in pictures. The document seems to be fine. But, if I save the file as a
..DOCX now, some images flip.

So I can tell the blank document is assuming XML format. When I tell the
document to be the older .DOC version, then problems start. The bug I see is
that the files drag in and look OK as if the display is ignoring the mirror
bits. However, there is some behind the scenes bit flipping happening that I
don't see until I try to save the file as a .DOCX or open the file using
Windows Office 2007 compatibility mode, which seems to look at the flipped
bits even though Mac Office 2008 ignores the bits for .DOC files.

Probably the most frustrating part is there is no way for me to fix the
images when they are .DOC files. I need them to be .DOC files too and not
..DOCX files as the Mac XML converter won't convert the file for everyone I
share with.

Is there a way for me to go in manually and clear out the flipped bits on
the Mac Office 2008 version of these .DOC files?

Thanks!
