Images will not display in Word Mac v.X

Odd problem. When I insert an image from a file into a word document, any
type of image file, the image will not appear in the word document. I have
chosen "show images" in my word Preferences view dialog box, but still no
images. I've tried choosing and unchoosing all the dialog boxes there, but
no images show.

The image does print.
The image appears when using "preview" in the print dialog box.
The image appears when the document is converted to a PDF.

Just not when inserting it into a document.
Help. It's driving me insane.

Word X for Mac, release 1
Mac OSX v.10.3.3
