How can I have individual letters appear in a presentation looking like an
impact printer?

Click Slide Show > Custom Animation.
Select the text, click Add Effect > Entrance > Appear.
Double click on the added effect to bring up the dialog box.
Under Animate text, click on the dropdown, select By letter.
Set the delay of your preference.
Ok your way out.

I want it to look like it's typing from an old non-electric typewriter.
Coming up from the bottom and striking the screen.

In this case, change the effect to Zoom.
Set the delay to 100%.
Set the Zoom property to "Out From Screen Bottom".
