import slides from other shows keeping individual backgrounds

i have several power point shows, for which i have used individual photos as
backgrounds. I would like to form one larger show with these, but when i try
to import them into the new show, the backgrounds do not come over. the
words and animations import, though.

Depends on your version of PowerPoint. In 2002/2003 you can maintain slide
formatting. In earlier versions you can't

As Michael says you can only do this if your ppt version supports multiple
masters (ie xp onwards) If it does tick the box to "keep source formatting"
when you import slides
