In Box

I have a number in parentheses next to my In Box. I have read all the
messages in my In Box, but the number is still there. How do I find out what
this is and how to get rid of it.

What version of Outlook are you using? In some versions the number next to
the Inbox can actually reflect the total items in the Inbox rather than
unread.

Also you might check and see if you have a view/filter applied (View |
Current View...) which might be hiding some unread messages from you.
