Increasing pixels in Picture Manager

I've noticed that Office Picture Manager also allows you to increase the
number of pixels. How does it do this and more to the point will it
necessarily mean a drop in quality when the picture is printed? I have some
photos from holiday which are approx 2500x2000 pixels, if I increase this to
say 5000x4000 then print the images in a large format (about A3) will they
appear grainy?

It can't add detail, if that's what you mean. Basically you will trade
grainy for blurry. Try it and compare the result of printing with
2500x2000 at A3 and then 5000x4000 at A3.
