Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Is there a way to independently format the width of a column on specific cells? In other words, if I wanted to change the width of the cells in the middle of the document, can I do so without affecting the width of the cells above it and below it?

No, a column is a column and has a single width.

Just in case you stumble upon it on your own, however :), Excel does enable
you to merge cells, giving an unsuspecting user the impression that you can
vary cell width within a column.

Be Forewarned:

Merged cells will interfere with almost anything else you might want to do
on that sheet & very likely can be the kiss of death for any workbook you
use them in. I bring the 'feature' to your attention only for the purpose of
advising against its use.
