Index fields and formatting

I

Ian Richardson

Hi

I've inherited a document and some of the index fields - XE - are formatted
as bold and I want to remove the formatting.

I found a similar post going back to 2005 and the answer then was use
paragraph formatting.

I have Word 2003 and 2007 and just wondering if this is still the case.
Also, is there a way to bold the text without bolding the index field.
Bolding the line with fields switched off still bolds the field.

Many thanks

Ian

To change the formatting applied to the XE (index entry) fields, you can
make use of Find and Replace. Display the Find and Replace dialog box, for
example by pressing Ctrl+H.

"Find what": ^d XE

"Replace with": ^&

With the insertion point in the "Replace with" box, click More (if
necessary) to see all options of the dialog box. Then use Format, Font to
specify the formatting that you want to apply. When you are done, click
Replace All.

If you want the text in the index to be bold, just modify the appropriate
Index style (Index 1 for the main entry, Index 2 for sub-entries, and so
forth).

It works, many thanks. I was close. I tried ^d XE in both find and replace
but got the "invalid character in replace" error.

Saved me a stack of time.

Thanks again

You are welcome.

I see that I forgot to mention that you would have to display hidden text
before searching for XE fields, but I guess you figured that one out. :)
