insert Adobe pdf file into Publisher 2000

When I insert an Adobe pdf file into a Word 2000 document, the file size is
3290 KB. When I insert the same Adobe pdf file into a blank Publisher 2000
document, the file size leaps to 75,000 KB. How can I reduce the Publisher
file size with the pdf (what's the best way to insert a pdf into Publisher)?
These are only 3 pages that are eventually sent to a printer and later posted
to the web as a section of a 300+ document, so all file sizes need to be
manageable.

How did you manage to insert a pdf into Pub? AFAIK, one has to convert
the pdf to a tif, eps, jpg or other image format before it can be inserted.

You're right - I have the full Adobe and click on "extract images as" and
select JPEG. I get good images when I insert it into Publisher, but the file
is way too big. Do you know how I can reduce the image file but still retain
the quality when it's inserted into Publisher? Also, any thoughts why the
same image file would be SO much bigger in Publisher than in Word?

A known problem. Pub used to "decompress" images when they were
inserted, causing even smaller images to create huge files. This was
addressed in Pub 2002 and improved in the latest version. My only
suggestion is to make sure you have sized the image in a graphics
program to what you will use in Pub. Depending on what the file will be
used for (web, ink jet printing, professional printing) the dpi needed
can range from 96 to 300.

Interesting - thanks! I'll start researching what would be involved for me to
upgrade to 2002 or later -- basically, whether it could possibly affect the
rest of my division's work -- we're still on office 2000 because we
discovered glitches when the rest of the department upgraded to XP that
majorly affected our Excel files. But, I'm assuming/hoping that if I'm the
only one using Publisher, that I could import their 2000 Excel files, for
example, into 2002 Publisher without the formatting changing in the 2000
Excel files -- this is for our agency's 300+ page budget document. Do you
have any idea if Publisher 2002 and Excel 2000 are completly compatible
(importing with losing any formatting)?

Hate to admit this, but I don't have a clue. I don't even use Pub,
except when a customer send me file. JoAnn, Mary, Ed, Sarah or some of
the others should be able to answer your question, though.

Michael! What an admission! And here was I thinking you knew more about it
than I did! I wouldn't know about Excel to Publisher though, as I've never
had need to do it. In fact, I don't use Publisher for labels or mail merges
at all. I use Word with the Avery plugin, which makes it a complete
no-brainer.

You know why Publisher 2000 produces such huge files though, I hope!

Publisher 2003 would be a better choice. You should be able to use all the Office
2000 products in conjunction with Publisher. I'm still using databases I created in
Works 4.0.

thank you, all -- I appreciate your responses. I plan to get the 2003
Publisher free trial and do a couple of test runs to see if this will help
production of our giant project -- will definitely purchase the upgrade if
it's successful -- thanks again! By the way, I've been cruising through the
2003 Publisher sites this morning, reading all the troubleshooting tips, etc.
-- if not for your responses yesterday, I would not have thought of an
upgrade helping our situation.
