Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel In older versions of Word there was a button at the bottom of the screen whereby one could insert or overwrite text.
Is that no longer possible?

Insert Mode is the default & Overtype Mode is a throwback to earlier days of
the program. The numerous & efficient methods of selecting content then
simply typing to replace it or press Delete once to remove it have made
Overtype mode more of a bother than a useful tool for most users.

Because it is so rarely used intentionally & was so easy to toggle on
accidentally Overtype Mode has been removed from keyboard access. You can
still activate it in Word> Preferences> Edit & you can assign a kybd
shortcut to that mode if you wish.
