Inserted a project into a 2nd project - Task ID's are incorrect

Good Day,

I inserted a sub project into a master project and the task ID's inserted
show as the sub numbers - so the master project now has ID #s 1 thru 120 and
then at 121 where I inserted the sub project it shows 1-120 again? It is
screwing up the dependencies I set up also. Is there any way to correct this?

wandatwitch,
The answer to your first question is "no", and the answer to your second
question is also "no", and there is no reason to "correct" it.

When you dynamically insert subprojects into a master, (and this is the
default type of consolidated master), the subprojects themselves are NOT
actually inserted into the master, rather the master contains a pointer
to each subproject. That's why you see the repeating ID sequence. Only
the insertion point summary line for each subproject is a part of the
master file. Dependencies within each subproject are fully intact. If
you have created links between subprojects, they also are preserved.

Now, why do you think you want to see a contiguous ID sequence? Do you
perhaps want a static master instead of a dynamic master?

Hi wandatwitch,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

That's how it should be when you insert projects into another, as this
creates a dynamic master. Tha master project just has placeholders for the
inserted projects and thus the IDs of individual projects don't change.
This will also maintain the original predecessor links within the projects.
It you want it otherwise, ie a static project, then copy/paste the projects
into the master, which will then become one project: then archive the
individual projects.

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Hi John and Mike,

Thans for the info. The issue I am having is that I can not link the
subproject items to the master. I can not get the program to identify the
subproject task ID# for example - when I try to link task ID # 5 - from the
subproject to the master - it trys to link the master task ID #5 not the
subproject #5 - Is there a special number you have to put in there in order
for it to recognize the sub instead of the master?

wandawitch,
First, you're welcome. Now to answer your question. In order to be able
to link subproject tasks to tasks in the master the master must have
tasks of its own. When linking between master and subproject or between
subprojects in a dynamic master, simply entering an ID number in the
Predecessor field will not work. The entry must include the full path to
the other file. For example, let's say you are trying to link subproject
task ID 5 with master task ID 4 and both master and subproject are
located on your "C:" drive. In the Predecessor field of the subproject
(fileA) the following would be entered:
C:\Documents and Settings\John\master.mpp-4.

However to avoid having to manually type that full path for each cross
project link, there is an easier way. First, identify the two tasks you
want to link (e.g. task 4 in the master and task 5 in the subproject).
If they are not both visible on the same screen, you might find it
easier to set a flag for each and then filter on the flag. That will put
them together on the screen. Then, click your mouse over the source task
(master task ID4) Gantt bar and while holding down the mouse button drag
to the start of the destination task (subproject task ID5) Gantt bar. A
cross project finish-to-start link will be created. If you need to add
lead or lag to the link or change it to a different link type (e.g.
start-to-start), you can edit the information in the Predecessor field
of the destination task.

Hope this helps.
