Inserted captions are not highlighted?

When I insert a caption, it is usually highlighted automatically. For tha
past three days, all my documents that have inserted cations do not have them
highlighted. Did I do something that turned off the highlighting feature?

That's not highlighting but shading to tell you it's a field. Field shading
is controlled by a setting under Tools | Options, View tab.
