Inserted graphics/objects

Can anyone explain what graphic format an object becomes
when it is pasted into word (thru paste special)as a Word
picture. I did a couple of test files and when a .tif
or .jpg is inserted thru paste special, the handles change
and the size of the file is smaller (sometimes
significantly). Is Word converting the images into
something else and if so - what. I can't find any
information on the website as to "what a Word picture"
really is and I need an explanation I can give my
engineers...

also - I have noted that sometimes when copying/pasting or
inserting thru "paste", once you click off the image, you
can no longer click on it. The only option seems to be
to "undo" to delete it. Is it somehow missing the
graphics layer in Word and is lost somewhere between other
layers? Is there a way to avoid this happening? My
thanks and best regards

Hi Lenny,

What Word will do to graphics files depends quite a bit on
which version of Word is involved, which you unfortunately
don't tell us. Generally, though, if you Paste Special as a
Word picture, Word will probably convert to its native
graphics format, which is *.wmf

If you want to retain the graphic's file format (which later
versions of can do), then you should use Insert/Picture/From
file.

As to the problem with pasting, then not being able to
select: I've only ever experienced this when pasting into a
document that has been protected for forms.

Hi Lenny,

If an EMF, PNG, GIF, or JPEG graphic is inserted into a Word document, when
the document is saved, two copies of the graphic are saved in the document.
Graphics are saved in the applicable EMF, PNG, GIF, or JPEG format and are
also converted to WMF (Windows Metafile) format.

Although not directly related to your query, see:

Cheers
