Inserting a PDF into OneNote as a printout to make notes to and fr

Again ... simplicity?

I want to know why every PDF I insert into a OneNote page as a copy for print
out (so that I can add notes to it) it appears in the reverse order? I've
tried changing the print settings so that it might "reverse order" but that
doesn't seem to have worked - and I can't find any settings to change it
directly in OneNote...

What nit-wit builds a research and productivity package that will allow a
serious researcher the ability to insert a PDF document that may be 40 pages
long - and have it appear backwards in the OneNote page as the default
setting???

Help me set OneNote so that PDF documents appear as a printout for taking
notes - in the correct order ... no one wants to spend their day rearranging
40 full-sized pages.

Ok - this one has me stumped. No matter what I do, I can't get it to
reproduce. My PDFs have always ended up in the right order when I print them
using "Send to OneNote 2007" printer. So, let's see what is different...
What version of Acrobat are you running? Is there anything else unusual on
your machine? Do other printouts come in backwards as well?

Thank you for your time, Kathy, but you didn't read carefully...

"Help me set OneNote so that PDF documents appear as a printout for taking
notes - in the correct order ... no one wants to spend their day rearranging
40 full-sized pages."

You will note that I said, "...for taking notes." I want to SEE them in
order so that I can add notes to them, and copy/paste segments from them into
other pages in OneNote.

I didn't say that I need to print them and that they are coming out of my
printer in the reverse order - if that was the case, I'd change the print
order settings and be done with it.

Now ... are you capable of a drag and drop, putting a PDF into a OneNote
page as a "insert the file as a printout so I can add notes to it" without it
appearing in reverse order - on the page and on the screen as you see it?

At this time ... I cannot.

Actually, as Kathy has quite correctly noted, when you insert a PDF
document into OneNote, that is using the "Send to OneNote 2007" printer.
The difference is that it is a virtual printer - instead of printing the
PDF on paper, it will instead insert it into OneNote.

I should also note that you didn't answer Kathy's questions, the answer
to which would have helped diagnose the problem. I will repeat them for you:
"What version of Acrobat are you running? Is there anything else unusual
on your machine? Do other printouts come in backwards as well?"

Also, if you have access to another computer running OneNote, insert one
of the PDFs that's causing trouble into OneNote on that computer and let
us know whether that comes out backwards as well.

Again ... simplicity?

There is a real challenge with reading on this discussion board.

#1 I did not say that I was using Acrobat ... because I am not ... and I
don't need to be. When I choose to open a PDF I simply use Adobe Reader.
However, I am not using Reader to send anything anywhere (because you can't).

Good Grief ... as I said, I'm just dragging and dropping to OneNote.

That's it. That's all.

What does it do? It gives me three different options for inserting it into a
page...
1) Insert a link to the original file
2) Insert a copy of the file onto the page
3) Insert the file as printout so I can add notes to it

Got it? I am doing #3 in that list. Understand? How it is that, "... I can
add notes to it" as described by the message box I don't understand. No
document I have added that way will allow any changes made to it - so adding
notes seems rather impossible at this time.

#2 I know very well what the operation is ... YES ... it creates a print to
file that appears on the page. Stating what the software already makes clear
is of no service to me.

#3 To answer the rest of your questions...

No - only PDF files appear in reverse page order ... Word docs do not ...
that's why I didn't mention them.

No - I keep a very clean machine and I hate anything running in the
background beyond the barest basics ... I use LiveOne Care so there is
nothing like Norton running, no games, no music, nothing else requiring a PDF
or any other kind of doc opened up, no video files running - regardless of
format ... nothing.

#4 I have tried several PDFs of different file origins (scans - as images,
documents created in Acrobat, etc.) and all open the same way - in reverse
page order on the OneNote page.

So ... is there a way to alter the order in which a PDF will appear on the
OneNote page? Is there something I can click that will change a setting
somewhere?

If not - please tell me, "no" and then pass this along to those persons who
continually work to develop this software and let's see if either we can't
fix it ... or add yet another bell and/or whistle to improve functionality.

There is a real challenge with reading on this discussion board.

And belligerence and histrionics won't get you any closer to a solution.

Why not just reply to the questions you've been asked with facts and
courtesy (the same way they've been asked)? We don't need the attitude.
No - only PDF files appear in reverse page order

I am unable to reproduce this. Can you perhaps post a link to a screenshot
and maybe a link to one of the PDF files you're having trouble with (even if
it is ALL PDF files) so we can try it out on our machines and narrow down
the cause?

I suggest instead of "dragging and dropping", try:

1) Open the PDF in Adobe Reader.
2) Go to "file" "print" and choose the printer "send to onenote" and then
hit the "print" button.
3) If this also results in reversed pages, then
3a) Go right back over to Reader, which is still open
3a) Redo step 2, except apply the checkbox to reverse the pages.

Obviously the PDF engine is an active participant in manipulating the file,
so any global settings on the PDF print dialog may need to be considerd.

In this case, verify that the "reverse" checkbox on the print dialog with
Adobe is not checked - this is the only way I can reproduce what you
describe...

Once you set it it should "stick".

Actually, what you are calling "Adobe Reader" IS Acrobat. It is just the
reader side, not the full or professional versions. The process you are
using opens Acrobat to open the file, then uses the OneNote printer to get
the pages into OneNote.

So, I repeat the one question you never answered: Which version of "Adobe
Reader" are you using?

Ilya,

Just for information, I am using Adobe Reader 8 on my system and I am unable
to reproduced the problem you are experiencing. I just finished dragging and
dropping over a half dozen PDF files from Windows Explorer into OneNote,
both the fully opened OneNote and also SideNotes and every time the PDF
files shows in the correct order.

I duplicated the problem by selecting reverse order printing in the Acrobat
print dialog box in a PDF file. A solution is to uncheck that box. The Send
to OneNote 2007 virtual printer then printed to Unfiled Pages in
front-to-back order. Ta-daaaa!

All settings in the print dialog boxes of your applications may need to be
reviewed. There may be settings that are used on a default or ad hoc basis
for printing to another printer that are inappropriate for printing to
OneNote. It is easy to forgot the customizing that users choose when taking
advantage of the various feaures of different printers.

I, too, believe that the tone of the thread originator's posts were
inappropriate. The reason for his rage? Maybe 'roid rage; frustration on a
deadline; or having to deal with having a little, tiny, actually minuscule....
Who knows?

I appreciate the free and willing advice offered on the Internet, especially
from professionals who make their living selling the kind of assistance they
give away here. Yeah, Kathy!

YouBetcha,

Thank you very much for your reply. You saw what I was experiencing,
understood the characteristics of the software I am using, and communicated
an easy solution in simple, straightforward terms that most could understand
with ease. Your assistance not only provided a remedy, but also scaffolded my
own understanding of how OneNote will function in accord with other programs,
and I can better troubleshoot other problems later because of it.

Take very dear care

Great to hear that the problem was resolved, but what was the solution? Was
it the "reverse pages" checkbox on Adobe?

People often scour usenet for solutions, and no doubt others may have the
same problem.

Thanks to all of you for participate on this discussion. This kind of tool
allows to find answers along the time.... I came to this discussion group
looking for the same answer, because I have the same issue. My intention is
not re-open it, but share my own experience.

Certainly, the issue was solved with YouBetcha's suggestion (thanks) and to
answer Kathy's questions that if what happen in MY case:
- Used to have Adobe Reader (or Acrobat, whatever hehe) 8.0
I didn't have any issue with printouts in OneNote2007, in that moment.
- Few months ago, I needed to download Adobe Reader 7.0 (which I have now)
Then, this issue came up! and belive me, it is not desirable at all.

I had no clue about what was happening/what did change?; until now that
YouBetcha's suggestion solved my issue and, "Michael" mentioned he has been
using an upgraded version of Adobe (as I used to do too).

Ok... ok... before my input keep getting longer, I want to congratulate
Kathy Jacobs/ Ilya Koulchin/ John Waller for your kindness and also I
encourage you to keep doing it in that way (being extremely tolerant)!!
specially to deal with that kind of actitude which results completely
unacceptable when you interact with adults.
(I am agree with Bill's message too).

All the best, Fanny

I'm having this trouble with Word 2007 and I can't figure out what the
problem is. I've gone into the settings in Word and I don't have a
universal option (that I can find) to print the pages in reverse, and
I checked the settings for the 'Send to OneNote 2007' and again
couldn't find a setting like that.

Just to check I went to the settings of my local printer and there was
the option, not selected, to print in reverse.

I haven't had Office 07 long enough to really customize it but I can
post specific settings if that is helpful.

Any ideas?
