inserting slide numbers

I have created my presentation, named and saved it. Now I
want to insert slide numbers and when I click on "Insert",
the option of slide numbers isn't even highlighted,
therefore, I can't insert slide numbers. What's my
solution?

Go to View | Master | Slide Master
then go to View | Header & Footers and check Slide Number
then click Apply All
