Install Office 2003

Rick

I am just about upgrade from Office XP to Office 2003 - is
it necessary to remove Office XP or can I just install
2003 files over the top?

If it is possible to install 'over the top' of previous
versions of software, does this principle apply to
operating systems - specifically Windows XP Home to
Professional?

Hi Rick,

Yes, you can just install Office 2003 over the top. It will detect your
previously installed applications and give you a choice of uninstalling them
or keeping them (all except outlook in which case if you choose to keep it,
it will remove Outlook (2002) XP).

You can upgrade over the top with operating systems also, however, I always
like a clean OS if I am going to upgrade. All documentation points to
upgrading over the top as being fine, however, I just like a clean OS to
start on. This avoids clutter at the start and you can create a restoration
point that you can go back to that you know is clean. The choice is yours.
Maybe you would like to upgrade first, then in a little while rebuild your
system. Upgrading over the top may help you identify any problem area's with
your system such as hardware and software incompatibility. If you start from
scratch you may not get the warning of what will cause an issue.

Regular maintenance of your system is advised and depending on your usage, a
format rebuild once a year maybe advised just to keep everything running
nicely. There are many schools of thought on this and I do not profess that
mine is the best but it has worked quite well for me over the past 6 odd
years.

Hope this information helps.
